Yours in camping,
taylor's camp story (told by his parents!)
For years, we watched with joy as Taylor's younger sister went off on her summer camp adventures. We eagerly listened to her stories, the camp songs she learned, the camp food she savored, and the variety of activities she enjoyed, from archery to horseback riding. But we never dared to dream that Taylor would have the same opportunity. Due to the presence of an extra little chromosome known as Down syndrome, the idea of him spending a week in the woods with his peers seemed beyond our reach.
But then we discovered Lions Camp Tatiyee - a camp exclusively tailored for children with special needs. It was a dream come true. The most incredible part? It wouldn't cost us a dime, and this was important because we couldn't pay thousands of dollars to send Taylor somewhere else. With hearts full of excitement, we swiftly downloaded the forms and eagerly sent off our first registration packet. The moment we got confirmation that Taylor could go to Camp Tatiyee, it felt as if we had stumbled upon Willy Wonka's Golden Ticket.
As the days drew nearer to camp, we followed the familiar ritual of packing, just as we did for Taylor's sister. With each item checked off the list, our car filled to the brim, we took off on a journey to Pinetop-Lakeside. The warmth and enthusiasm with which we were greeted assured us that this experience would be extraordinary. Taylor wasted no time in showing us his newfound sense of independence, urging us to bid farewell so he could embrace the camp adventure that awaited him.
When Friday arrived, we joyfully picked up a beaming Taylor, but nearly refused to leave because he loved it so much! Promising him a return trip the following year, we started back on our journey home. Since then, Taylor has become our constant reminder to send in his registration as soon as spring arrives, eagerly counting down the days until camp begins. It has become the highlight of his summer, around which all other activities are planned.
Taylor has formed countless friendships at Lions Camp Tatiyee, remembering each counselor's name with so much affection. He never fails to rave about the delicious food, and we joke that he gains five pounds for every week spent at camp. The exhilaration of driving go-karts—a privilege he may never experience in a real car—is an experience he cherishes deeply. Moreover, Taylor's talent show performances have become the stuff of legend.
Lions Camp Tatiyee has given Taylor a priceless gift—the opportunity to be a normal young adult and create lifelong memories. This camp has enabled him to partake in activities that foster independence and empowerment, away from his parents (much to his delight!). The staff at the camp show exceptional dedication. They engage with each camper on a personal level, ensuring a safe and special experience for all.
One remarkable aspect of Lions Camp Tatiyee is their recognition of Taylor's desire to assist others. They have allowed him to be a mentor to a younger camper, offering comfort and support for kids who are away from home for the first time. Witnessing these opportunities unfold at camp Tatiyee, we recognize their critical role in shaping the young man we are immensely proud of - a young man who, despite his disabilities, possesses a plethora of abilities that never fail to bring a smile to our faces.
With heartfelt gratitude, we extend our sincerest thanks to the dedicated staff at camp Tatiyee, and all the generous donors who make this extraordinary experience possible. Your unwavering support has enriched Taylor's life in immeasurable ways, and we are forever indebted to you.
how camp tatiyee makes science cool
Camp Tatiyee is thrilled to introduce you to our mind-boggling science programs, designed to ignite camper’s curiosity, bridge the gap in educational enrichment for the special needs community, and unlock a world of endless possibilities!
Campers start by mixing potions, observing colorful reactions, and discovering the secrets hidden in test tubes. Camp Tatiyee’s chemistry program let’s participants become mad scientists, conducting experiments that will leave them in awe of the wonders of the natural world. It's a chance for campers to unleash their inner scientist, ask questions, and make exciting discoveries!
But that's not all! In our robotics program, campers enter the realm of futuristic technology and witness the magic of machines coming to life. With their own hands, campers build robots from scratch, program them to perform tasks, and watch in awe as they respond to their commands. It's an opportunity to develop problem-solving skills, embrace creativity, and see the power of science and engineering come alive.
At Camp Tatiyee, we believe that every camper, regardless of their circumstances or abilities, should have access to enriching educational experiences. Our science programs are designed to bridge the gap and provide a platform for special needs youth to explore new topics, stimulate their curiosity, and discover their own potential.
We always encourage campers to keep exploring, keep questioning, and let the world of science be their playground of endless discovery!
